Computer Courses:

Intro to Keyboarding

Learn to type using the proper fingering method. The student is shown how to use the keyboard and to type without looking at the keyboard. No prior experience is needed.

Keyboard Skill Building

These courses are suitable for the student who already knows keyboarding but wishes to increase speed, accuracy and dexterity on the keyboard in a controlled environment. Offered in three levels, the participant is assessed and then placed in the appropriate level.

Introduction to Personal Computers

This course introduces students to the use of personal computers including a brief introduction to Windows and to the use of the mouse, keyboard, monitors, and printers. It also touches on the concept of file and folder management and the organization of files on a hard drive. A brief introduction to networks is included. Students use a combination of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer products in this course.

Introduction to the Internet

Students are given a orientation to common procedures they can employ to maximize successful use of the Internet and all its features. Learn to customize the Internet Explorer browser and investigate the various components of the Internet including the World Wide Web, Electronic Mail, Newsgroups, Mailing Lists Discussion Groups and IRC/Chat. Also, how to download, safety, security and shopping on the Web. Basic Web page set up and use of free e-mail service on the Web and actually go online. Students will also explore the latest Internet multimedia, including audio video streaming and animation.

Microsoft Windows

Available in beginner and advanced levels a combination of theoretical, how-to information and practical exercises, in identifying desktop objects, use of the smart menu, create shortcuts, use of help function and WordPad, taskbars, multiple documents, creation of folders, paint accessories, etc. The advanced level students learn to optimize the mouse, keyboard and menu system for usability, run system utilities to correct errors and defrag disks, perform backup and restore operations and install and uninstall applications.

Microsoft Word

Word Processing replaces our old typewriters with automation including auto correction for spelling errors. It is recommend that you take all three levels to maximize efficiency in using all the features this powerful program has to offer.

The beginner level covers basics in word processing including typing, editing and formatting a document. How to cut, copy and paste blocks of text within the document and the use of the spell checker and thesaurus. The intermediate level shows students how to use headers and footers, tables, mail merge, and outlining. Section breaks, columns, graphic effects, and modifying data are additional items covered.

The advanced level teaches students to create, modify and delete styles as well as advanced formatting and page layout features, and to work with charts, pictures, tables and lists. They will also learn to work with shared documents in a workgroup, adding comments, tracking changes, protecting and merging documents. Working with master documents and macros is also included.

Microsoft Excel

Adding columns up and down and across has never been easier. Excel does all this for you and allows you to extract information easily and make changes with no effort. This very powerful program is offered in a beginner, intermediate and advanced level. We only recommend the advanced level to those who work in accounting or intend to use this program extensively.

The beginner level covers the basic commands necessary to produce several different types of worksheets and teaches how to work with charts and graphs including formulas. The intermediate level includes working with multiple worksheets, how to use freeze panes and custom views, how to link worksheets and workbooks and consolidate data. You also learn to create and modify lines and objects, create and modify drawing objects including 3D shapes, use data map features and create, modify, format, print and delete charts. In the advanced level you use data base functions, analyse and reporting tools like scenario manager, report manager and goal seek. Also included is how to work with templates and how to create and use Macros.

Microsoft Access

A database is like replacing the old filing system. You learn how to store information in a logical manner and how to extract certain information without having to pull out the entire file. If you think of filing recipe cards and then taking out only the ones with sauces, you get the idea. When you master this program you can save your employer hours of tedious work, keep track of clients and prepare detailed reports.

The beginner level teaches the essentials of database management and the use of fundamental tasks including creating a table and entering data, filtering, sorting and indexing, producing forms and reports.

In the second level students learn about: introduction to relationships, covering the concepts and techniques involved in defining a relationship; enforcing referential integrity; setting lookup field properties, documenting and printing relationships. Students learn to create a switchboard, import and export data, and manage a database.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Show off your new skills with professional presentations that include animated images, 3D images, company logo’s, pictures and graphs. Learn all about creating a masterpiece that gets rave reviews.

In level 1 you will learn to create presentations from generating slides, adding text and graphics and printing speaker notes and handouts, to publishing a presentation to the Web.

In level 2 you work with tables, charts, learn to customize backgrounds and use colour schemes, to apply advanced slide show options, including animation effects.

This program is used to create Web sites.  You learn to work with an existing FrontPage Web as well as how to set up a Web using FrontPage.  FrontPage enables the user to create Web pages without having to learn the programming language that is used on the World Wide Web, HTML.

Basic Bookkeeping Level 1
Basic Bookkeeping Level 1 helps you to understand the double entry system of bookkeeping. It is especially beneficial if you are planning to take an automated accounting program, or if you are an entrepreneur preparing financial statements, for the first time. The course follows the development of the accounting records from a company’s first day in business handling a company’s accounts, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll.

Basic Bookkeeping Level 2
Level 2 is designed for the student who wishes to learn more about accounting and some of the procedures used to produce financial reports. It follows the development of worksheets leading up to and including year-end financial reports. During the process, you will learn how to make year-end adjustments to several accounts.

This course is designed for students to learn the fundamentals of computerized accounting. Students will learn how to manage customer and vendor lists, create business forms, use

Simply Accounting Pro 8.5
This course is designed for students who have an understanding of basic bookkeeping procedures and who wish to use a computer system to handle daily transactions. During the course students will use the Setup Wizard to create company data files, customize the Chart of Accounts for a new company, and enter historical data for the company as of the conversion date. They will learn how to use the General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and Payroll Ledgers to handle daily transactions. In addition, students will use these ledgers in combination with the Inventory and Services Ledger and the Project Ledger. During the process, students prepare several bank reconciliations. Various features of Simply Accounting such as budgeting, graphs and charts, passwords, shortcuts, forms and reports are covered. There are two Lab Exercises where students can practice using the program.

AccPac Plus and AccPac 5.0 for Windows Including : General Ledger, Accounts Payable

These courses are designed to teach AccPac by giving hands-on experience in creating a set of books for a sample company and teaching the student how entries are made and reports generated. Learn daily transaction processing, and period end processing, in addition to entering and maintaining master data.
Administrative Skills:
Business Correspondence
Learn to set up professional business letters, with different styles, wording and composition. The 2nd level emphasizes document layout and editing skills. The course is designed specifically for correspondence required in a corporate environment . Intermediate word processing and a minimum of 30 wpm typing speed are prerequisites.

Business Math
In addition to brushing up on basic math skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, the student will learn more complex calculations including interest, loan payments, net present values and returns on investments. Management Fundamentals
This is an introductory management course that provides students with the essential tools required for today’s effective supervisors or junior managers. Topics covered include “Soft Skills” such as problem solving, negotiating, time management and decision making. “Hard Skills” include preparing forecasts and budgets, drafting training and development plans, reward incentives and developing strategies.

Office Procedures
Designed for those who have had no formal office training. The objective of the first level is to teach the student basic office procedures for entry into a clerical, filing, receptionist or office clerk position. Each lesson contains a Business English component relating to the contents covered in that particular lesson. The objective of the second level of the course is to teach skills needed for entry into an administrative position. No prerequisite required.

Punctuation and Writing Skills
In this course, the student will learn the fundamentals of punctuation and writing skills, to be able to convey professionalism in their correspondence. In addition to punctuation rules and spelling, English grammar and elements of effective writing styles are taught.
General Courses:
Customer Service
Learn the skills of communication with customers in a way that enhances customer service. Students will learn how to develop a friendly attitude, establish rapport and create a good impression. Handling customer conflicts and complaints, as well as how to manage time and stress are covered. The course highlights common customer pitfalls, such as giving false promises, and explains how to avoid making them. It also explains how to go the extra mile for customers.

Workplace Success/Intrapreneurship
This course combines theoretical, how-to information with practical applications to be successful in today’s workplace environment. Students are required to draw on their own experiences, to research information, and to apply their knowledge to typical workplace situations. Lessons include: employability skills, self-empowerment, cooperating in teams, conflict fundamentals, handling and resolving conflict, building and maintaining positive relationships, job enrichment and advancement, time management, communicating effectively, dealing with criticism, meeting fundamentals and intrapreneurship concepts.

Medical Terminology
This course provides the tools to analyse medical terms and to learn the meaning, spelling, and pronunciation of terms. Students will be presented with anatomical, pathological and clinical terms and procedures relating to body systems. Diagnostic and surgical terminology is expanded upon and pharmacological terminology is introduced.
